Mr Arangies started his educational career at Parow North Primary in 1987. He
moved to Durbanville Primary School in 1989 where his interest in Curriculum and
Technology started. He became Head of Department at Durbanville Primary in
1991.
He and was appointed as Headmaster at Paarl Boys’ Primary in 1997 and was
instrumental in quite a few changes at the school while maintaining the
tradition and ethos of the school.
Mr Arangies
maintains a
tradition of
very competitive sport teams at Paarl Boys’ Primary, but also instilled a policy
of balance and participation.
Mr Arangies has a special passion for Curriculumm and the use of Technology in
delivering Curriculum. He is/was responsible for most of the planning and
development of Websites and/or the Intranet of the school.
Paarl Boys’ Primary is one of very few schools
which runs its own websites on its own servers inside the school:
www.paarlboysprimary.org.za
;
www.paarlboysp.co.za.
His experience with computers started at
Durbanville Primary in 1990. He soon became disheartened by the way in which
computer skills in education were viewed as a separate skill which learners had
to acquire, which was also separated from the normal curriculum of the
classroom.
He became involved in the technical side of computers in the
early 90s and embarked on a Master’s Degree in Curriculum Development in
1993. The topic of his thesis for the M.Ed was “The
use of a Computer Centre in the Primary School.”
Through careful mentoring and staff development the following
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY PLAN was designed by him as a 10 year plan and put into
place (1998 – 2008):
 |
a modern,
glass-partitioned Research Centre was constructed from two classrooms and a
passage in 1997; |
 |
a fully
functioning 30 station computer centre was established in 1998;
(Money was raised for this project and it was for paid within 2 years.) |
 |
roll out of
computers to all classes from 2000 (Grade R – 7) completed in 2002/3 |
 |
24/7
Internet and email access in all classes established by 2002/03; |
 |
All paper
communication was replaced by internal email by 2003 |
 |
2nd
Skype and Communication computer room established in 2006 – 12 Computers |
 |
3rd
CAMI (Mathematics/Reading) computer lab completed by 2007 – 25 Computers |
 |
a full
wireless environment in Paarl Boys’ Primary completed (2006/7) |
 |
implementation of TVs in a few classes in 2005 (an experiment) |
 |
2007-2010 –
a fully functional Intranet giving access to all staff members to all
information (basic data, curriculum and interactive material) from anywhere in
the school and from home; |
 |
TVs were
replaced by Interactive Whiteboards and Data Video Projectors from 2006 |
 |
The
Interactive Whiteboards project was completed in 2009 with data/video
projectors and whiteboards in all classes
(Grades R – 7) |
 |
Two
Classrooms were equipped with Apple Laptop Computers in 2009/2010 – these
were connected through a Wireless Connection to a new Apple Server in the
Computer Centre. A Donation of 500 000,00 by APPLE was given to Paarl
Boys’ Primary School for innovative Curriculum/ICT work done in the school. |
Paarl
Boys’ Primary was awarded the NATIONAL
MOST IMPROVED SCHOOLS AWARD in Technology in 2001
and was placed jointly in the Second Place with Grey High (Bloemfontein.)
Mr Arangies keeps abreast of the latest developments in ICT in Education by
attending conferences regularly, in South Africa and abroad, this has given him
an insight into what role ICT should play in schools.

ICT is still regarded as an add-on in Education
and many educationists fail to see the full integration of ICT in the
education process – ICT cannot be regarded as something separate from
curriculum development in the classroom.
Mr Arangies receives regular requests from
schools for guidance and understanding for the latest development in technology
integration in curriculum delivery.
Mr Arangies initiated a
CURRICULUM PROJECT in 1998 to change all learning material to electronic format
as per Curriculum 2005 – Revision was done when the RNCS was announced. (Changes
for 2010 are already in progress).
 |
A Liaison
was sought with Paarl Girls High (Primary section) and the staff of both
schools were joined in one team and Learning Area Heads were selected. This
liaison was formed to have a more even distribution of the workload. (this
increased the staff capacity of the two schools). |
 |
Learning
Areas worked together and a very skilled computer teacher was seconded for two
years to convert curriculum developed by the curriculum teams into electronic
format, and material was also translated in both languages. |
 |
In 1999/2000
the RNCS was implemented and all material was centralized in one electronic
database on the INTRANET of the school. (Something very few schools had access
to.) |
 |
Electronic
web links and other connections were included in the learning material and
implemented in 2007 to be fully incorporated by 2009. |
 |
A similar
system of organized INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARD material was started in 2008 – to
be fully functional in 2010 for modern and visual curriculum delivery in every
classroom. |
The delivery of curriculum is completely
integrated with technology in Paarl Boys’ Primary.
